Makarska compresses a historic centre, harbour, long urban beach corridor and rising inland streets into a small map. The correct base is the one that makes your repeated journey easy from the actual entrance—not the one with the most attractive area label.

Read Makarska from the harbour west—and then uphill

The Tourist Board describes the central beach corridor beginning around the harbour and continuing west through the inhabited hotel area. The city plan separately names Donja Luka and Ratac in the tourism and waterfront structure. That supports a practical sequence from historic centre and harbour to Donja Luka and Ratac, without pretending that one marketing boundary is official.

Bili Brig and Zelenka sit in separate inland municipal contexts. They belong in the stay decision because the address can change the daily route materially, not because they form one official tourist district.

The official Makarska bus-station website lists Ante Starčevića 30 and separate arrival and departure searches. Use those searches for your date before deciding that a stay works without a car.

After checking the bus, confirm the route from the station to the actual entrance. Ask the property about steps, luggage storage before check-in and late arrival. A convenient beach position does not by itself prove an easy arrival with suitcases.

Choose the journey you refuse to organise twice a day

Old Town and the harbour edge make central evenings simplest. Donja Luka is the most forgiving first balance when the main beach and historic centre both matter. Ratac moves the centre of gravity farther along the beach corridor, so the quality of the stay depends more on the exact return route.

A map distance is not a daily experience. Check crossings, pavement continuity, elevation and the point where a vehicle can actually stop. Repeat the test for morning beach access and one late return.

Bili Brig and Zelenka are address decisions, not generic bargains

The City identifies Ratac–Zelenka and Bili Brig–Gorinka as separate local-council contexts. A 2025 street assignment gives a reproducible administrative crosswalk, while the Zelenka plan exposes meaningful height and network variation inside one bounded subarea.

None of that proves a universal gradient, walking time or poor location. It proves the opposite: the inland label is too broad to carry the recommendation. The exact street, address number, surface and route must do the work.

Finish with a property-level evidence check
